The plants we grow in our homes contribute to more oxygen and to cleaning the air from toxins and mold. This means that keeping plants in our homes is good for our health since we inhale fewer toxins and other threats.
NASA has carried out a study on domestic plants and it was discovered that some types of plants are able to filter the air we breathe and to remove some organic compounds that evaporate better than others.
These plants also filter the air from various building materials, dust, paint and so forth.
We present you the best six plants that are recommended for you to keep in your home:
- Aloe – this is an excellent plant since it boosts the amount of oxygen in your home. It is also beneficial since it absorbs carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and formaldehyde. Namely, one aloe plant is as effective as nine biological air purifiers cans.
- Ficus (Ficus Elastica) – this is a great plant for keeping in your home since it does not require much light. It is very beneficial when it comes to cleaning the air of formaldehyde. However, keep it away from small children and pets since its leaves can be toxic.
- Ivy (Hedera Helix) – this plant is a must for every home, because it can remove up to 60 percent of the toxins in the air and up to 58 percent of the particles of feces in only 6 hours time from the moment it is brought in the place.
- Spider plant (Chlorophytum Comosum) – this plant can make photosynthesis even under difficult conditions, as minimum light is. It is great for absorption of toxins from the air, including carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, styrene and gasoline. One spider plant is enough for purifying the air in a space of 200 square meters.
- Snake plant (Sanseveria Trifasciata “Laurentil”) – this plant is next to indestructible and it is great for you to have it in your home. It requires very little light for the process of photosynthesis and it is highly resistant in general. It eliminates toxins from the air, and produces great amounts of oxygen, thus it is recommended for keeping it in the bedroom.
- Peace llilies (‘Mauna Loa’ Spathiphyllum) – it is great for eliminating toxins and chemicals from the air. It is very beneficial for removing trichloroethylene and formaldehyde from the air.
According to NASA, you should keep between 15 and 19 of these plants in a 500 square meters area. For 80 square meter area, 3-4 plants will suffice. Do not forget to place some of them in your bedroom because you spend enough time there spending oxygen, and they will compensate those amounts of oxygen.
