According to The Center for Science in the Public Interest, Splenda, a type of artificial sweetener is considered highly disadvantageous.
This artificial sweetener is called sucralose but it is better known as Splenda. In its chemical guide to food additives, a food safety advocacy group significantly reduced its grade of importance, meaning it downgraded its rating from “safe” to “caution”.
The aforementioned nonprofit watchdog group, The Center for Science in the Public Interest, revealed that they were reducing their safety rating of Splenda from “safe” to “caution”. This means that this artificial sweetener ‘may pose a risk and needs to be better tested’.
According to the findings of a recent survey done at an independent Italian laboratory, mice that were given Splenda on regular basis, in fact developed leukemia. Being on top of the long list of studies disapproving the use of Splenda, this evidence is the main reason the FDA has made this change in the safety rating.
In many cases, DNA damage is a potential cause of cancer. According to a 2002 study, Splenda ingestion significantly damaged the DNA of mice. Moreover, a 2008 study, found that ingestion of this sweetener can potentially kill off necessary bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.
Killing these necessary bacteria can result in disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, as it fights off invaders and it helps with digestion. This study, confirmed that Splenda can cause leukemia in mice which are exposed before birth.
Initially, the only durable animal-feeding studies were done by splenda`s manufacturers, according to CSPI.
In order to avoid the risk of both non-caloric sweeteners and sugars, CSPI suggest switching to seltzer water, plain water, unsweetened iced tea, seltzer mixed with some fruit juice, and flavored unsweetened waters.
Johnson and Johnson, an American multinational medical device, pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods manufacturer, is a company which markets Splenda. After this shocking revelation, the company released a statement claiming that more than 110 studies conducted over the past 20 years have proven the safety of Splenda.
