In the study conducted at Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences, there were 88 participants who were put on a reduced-calories diet at least 3 months. Even though both group lost weight, the cumin group`s results were significantly better. The women from this group lost 4.5 pounds on average more, than the other group given a plain yogurt. In addition, the cumin group had larger reductions in cholesterol levels, body mass index, waist circumference and percentage of fat mass.
This spice is loaded with phytosterols, a chemical known to block the absorption of cholesterol in the body. According to the researchers, cumin can temporarily increase metabolic rate, just as the other hot spices do.
