Although they are not serious, hiccups can be very annoying. They occur because of the diaphragm spasms which causes us to take a quick breath. The sudden rush of air causes the epiglottis to shut and interrupt the breath, which makes the “hic” sound. Some of the remedies are holding your breath or drinking water.
According to Andre Dubois, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine in the emerging infectious diseases graduate program at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, a teaspoon of sugar swallowed dry can stop hiccups in minutes. Sugar modifies the nerve muscles that would otherwise tell the muscles in the diaphragm to contract spasmodically and lead to hiccups.
Take one teaspoon of sugar and put it in the back of your tongue. You will overload the nerve endings in the mouth with a sweet sensation, and that will help you stop the hiccups.
