The most of the fruits and vegetables that can be found on the market are contaminated with different kinds of pesticides. The chances to buy fresh and organic vegetables in the stores are really low, and almost impossible, and still these sprayed products are far more expensive than the organic.
The best way to make sure that you consume healthy and not contaminated products is to plant them in your own garden. But we suppose that most of you don’t have that chance, so what to do in that case? Washing them only under running water is not enough, which is especially problematic for fruits such as grapes, strawberries, blueberries that can’t be washed separately. Some people practice washing them with mild detergent and dishwashing brush, after which they peel them. But the thing is that the peels often contain most of the nutrients of the fruit.
In this post we will provide you with a simple trick that will help you solve this problem.
Take a bowl and dissolve apple vinegar (you can also use some other if you want) in water in relation which will be at least 1:10 (for 5 liters of water half a liter of vinegar). After you stir it well add the fruits and vegetables into it. The temperature of the water is important and it has to be at room temperature, and if it is cold first warm it up. Leave them sit like that in the water in a period of 10-15 minutes. In the meantime stir them several times. After the time passes take the fruits and vegetables out of the water and rinse them.
The water will prove you how much harmful chemical the fruits contain. The water will be dirty since all the chemicals, pesticides and dirt will remain in it. Another benefit that you will get from this process is that it will prolong the lifetime for several days of fruits that are easy perishable such as strawberries. Don’t use the solution more than several days.
In case when you doubt that the fruits or vegetables are contaminated with huge amount of pesticides you should increase the amount of vinegar in the solution.
Apples, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, nectarines and grapes are one of the most sprayed fruits. While the most sprayed vegetables are: celery, spinach, lettuce, bell red pepper, cucumber, potatoes and cherry tomatoes.
Some other tips:
- Always wash the melons before cutting them, maybe you don’t practice this but you should because it is full with microbes and when it is not washed they get in.
- Remove the outer leaves of the leafy vegetables.
- Only bruise and wipe the mushrooms.
