Reflexology is a type of health therapy, based on the theory that different points on the body (feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears) correspond with different areas of the body.
Only few people are familiar with this form of massage, yet it has extraordinary health benefits to both central nervous system and to the immune system. People who suffer from occasional or chronic insomnia often use the reflexology in order to sleep better at night and to relax.
Even though you can perform reflexology exercises on yourself, they are more effective when performed by another person, particularly when performing Reflexology on the feet. Keep reading and learn more about the following two exercises which you can perform on someone you love in order to help him/her sleep better at night.
Reflexology Exercises For Insomnia :
- Reflexology Exercise Performed on the Feet
First, the person you are performing the Reflexology exercise on must lie down, relax and close their eyes. They should breathe deeply and slowly, making sure they use their stomach to breathe instead of their chest. This is important because it allows a full breath into their diaphragm. Then, you should find the middle of the foot and move up 2 inches or 1 inch in children and in those with smaller feet, until you reach the middle of the foot about an inch or inch-and-a-half below the bottom of the toes. As you press in, you will be able to feel the center point of the foot, known as ‘diaphragm area”.
Relax the pressure on the diaphragm area of the foot as the person breathes in deeply. As they breathe out slowly, push onto the diaphragm area of the foot slowly and firmly. Repeat these steps for 1-10 minutes as the person continues to take deep breaths. Soon, the person will be completely relaxed or asleep.
- Reflexology Exercises Performed on the Ear ( It can be easily done on yourself)
You should lie down in your bed, close your eyes and fully relax. Breathe in and out fully and deeply from the diaphragm. Then, you should find the “ Insomnia 1” point for Reflexology on your ear. The best way of finding this point is putting your finger on the area when you would have an ear piercing on the upper part of the ear. It is not located on the curved part of the ear, but on the inner part of your ear next to the curve instead.
You should hold the “Insomnia 2” point of your ear for a minute and squeeze it firmly between two fingers. After one minute or so, release. Repeat this procedure 1-5 minutes.
Many people suffer from insomnia nowadays, but luckily, making positive alternations in diet and lifestyle, and adding the relaxation exercises as the one outlined above, insomnia can be overcome.
